Richard Marshall (born 24 July 1975) is a British businessman specializing in the grooming industry. Since purchasing his first shop in 2005, he has expanded the Pall Mall Barbers chain of male grooming salons throughout Europe and North America. In addition to founding Pall Mall Barbers [1], Richard Marshall's companies also manufacture shaving creams, brushes, and other male grooming products that are distributed internationally. [2]

Early life[edit]

Richard Marshall was born in Bedford, a county town in Bedfordshire, England to father Richard Lesley Marshall and mother Maureen Neeves. In school he found the classroom curriculum to be lacking of interest and importance and turned his attention towards trade and commerce. Dropping out of Mark Rutherford School at 15, it was clear that his path would be a self-determined one, outside of the traditional route presented by the education system. Instead, he opted for an entrepreneurial journey which would commence with vocational training.[3]

Richard suffered from Dyslexia and was unable to read or write until the age of 30. 1 Dropping out of Mark Rutherford School at 15, it was clear that his path would be a self-determined one, outside of the traditional route presented by the education system. 2 Instead, he opted for an entrepreneurial journey which would commence with vocational training.

Richard attended Barnfield College in Luton where he took on a hairdressing course. This proved fruitful as he won competitions including the South of England contest two years running, as well as being a runner-up in the national finals. During this time, Richard was devoted to perfecting his craft and training his mind, understanding at a young age that mindset would play a significant part in his future business ventures. He studied Neuro-linguistic Programming under the guidance of its co-creators Michael Carroll and John Grinder.

Early business career[edit]

When he was 12 years old Richard visited a barber shop in Bedford, where his sister was working as a receptionist. He was offered a job earning £5 per day as a floor sweeper, which he duly accepted, and thereafter his romance with barbering arose. He started barbering his friends when he was 14 and by the time he was 16 he'd started entering local hair cutting competitions.[4]

Richard moved to London at age 21 where he worked on Savile Row. For the next 8 years, he would work for various barbershops where he became known for the quality of his service and his ability to provide unique, personable experience to each gentleman who sat in his chair. This allowed him to build a book of loyal clients, proving himself an incredibly valuable asset to the shops.

During his time in Mayfair, Richard’s clients included notable people such as media executive Jonathan Newhouse, journalist Robin Oakley, businessman Nicholas Coleridge and fashion designer Ozwald Boateng.

In 1995, Richard met writer Peter Thompson. After striking up a rapport, they became close friends. In September 2005, Peter officially became Richard’s mentor.

The Birth and Growth of Pall Mall Barbers[edit]

Determined to start his own business he purchased the Pall Mall Toilet Salon, a run-down barbershop [5] near Trafalgar Square six months before his 30th birthday. The location of this first business would prove significant due to the proximity to Nelson’s Column; as it is said that through his father’s bloodline, Richard is a distant descendant of Captain Hardy, who famously served on Admiral Horatio Nelson’s flagship.

Richard acquired the shop near Trafalgar Square in 2005 and named it Pall Mall Barbers. [6] He decided to retain the traditional feel while simultaneously implementing his own style, to make it the most hygienic and comfortable setting possible. He claimed that he knew he wanted to buy the business from the moment he set eyes on the sinks and taps in the shop, which needed work but had retained their classic character. [7]

Investing all of his knowledge and expertise into the management of the shop gave him the impetus to grow the brand further by opening more stores. In 2011, Pall Mall Barbers was launched in Fitzrovia and then the Westminster and Bishopsgate shops followed. King’s Cross [8] was next and Paddington became the latest location [9] for the Pall Mall Barbers family.

In 2018, Richard invested in a commercial property at the Rockefeller Center, New York City. This became the first international Pall Mall Barbers shop. The film Trading Places was the inspiration for opening a shop in NYC [10] according to Marshall. [11]

Royal visit[edit]

On February 14, 2019 Prince William[12] visited the Pall Mall Barbers Paddington location in London.[13] According to People Magazine, Pall Mall Barbers is a member of the Lions Barber Collective, a group of barber shops that instructs its employees in how to recognize the signs of mental illness and help prevent suicide.[14]

To gain more insight Prince William met with both Richard Marshall and Lions Barber Collective founder Tom Chapman.[14]

The training provided to these barbers is called BarbersTalk.[15]

Personal Life[edit]

Away from his barbering empire, Richard enjoys investing in property. When he has time, he likes to take advantage of his season ticket at The Emirates where he can watch his beloved Arsenal play in front of packed crowds. The joy of this is matched with that he receives from watching martial arts and playing golf; two activities which have continued from his adolescence.[16]
