Richard Newbold

Richard Angus Newbold (born 16 January 1961) is a British entrepreneur and innovator,^[1] famous for his many innovations in the field of logistics. He is the founder of the UK’s leading online platform returnloads.net which has over many years allowed thousands of haulage companies to efficiently exchange loads over the World Wide Web.^[2]^[3] Newbold has an experience of over thirty years in the transport and logistics industry and is considered as one of the industry leaders.^[4]

Early Life

Newbold was born to James Richard Charles and Mavis Newbold in Sunderland, England. He was the youngest of their two children. He left school at age 16 and moved South to Surrey at the age of 22, where he started his first haulage business.

At the age of 22, Newbold started a business as an owner-driver. He had many ambitions and one was to own a string of companies. After passing his HGV license and his Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage in 1984, Newbold successfully applied for an Operator’s Licence and set up as an Owner-Driver in 1985. Ten years later, Newbold was operating over 40 vehicles, employing a staff of around 50 people as a Triple-A Transport Services company based at the Port of Tilbury, Essex.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

In February 1988, Newbold established Triple A Transport Services Ltd. which is a warehousing and logistics business based at the Port of Tilbury.^[5]^[6]^[7] He is the owner and the CEO of the company.^[8] Richard Newbold was also one of the original franchisees of Pizza Express and ran the franchise in Woking, Surrey from 1990 prior to the company going public and Newbold was a founder member of Pallex UK, one of the leading pallet distribution networks in the UK.

In 2000, Newbold set up returnloads.net and is the Managing Director of the company.^[9]^[10] The company has grown in the past nineteen years to become the busiest freight exchange website in Great Britain, allowing thousands of haulage companies to efficiently exchange loads over the World Wide Web. His idea has grown to the point where it saves two trillion pounds of CO2 emission by preventing half a million heavy goods vehicles (HGV) from returning empty.

In January 2011, Newbold also established ‘The Logistics Terminal’ where he serves as joint managing partner.^[11]^[12] It is a multimodal distribution Port-centric Warehousing and Handling operation based within The Port of London.^[13] The Logistics Terminal is currently a distribution hub for some of the largest companies in the UK, offering complete logistical services to major importers and retailers. TLT offers clients services ranging from worldwide shipping, through to receipt of shipping containers directly into their facility within the Port, offloading, restitution and storage, followed by National and International distribution. In order to optimize the use of warehouse capacity, Newbold launched ‘The Warehouse Exchange’ in 2018 which allows warehousing companies to network through the platform to share available space so that all warehouses can be kept at capacity.^[14]

Newbold also owns RAN Group Holdings since 2000, Lancaster Homes ltd. since 2006, and TLT Panel Cutting.^[15] He has also been crowned Essex's Businessman of the Year twice.^[16]

Personal Life

Newbold is married and has two children.
