Richard Shepherd-Barron is an agricultural journalist and former racing driver (1958-1963).
Early life
Richard Michael Shepherd-Barron was born on 29 January 1937 in Karachi, Sind Province of British India (now Pakistan), to parents Wilfrid Shepherd-Barron (Civil Engineer) and Dorothy Shepherd-Barron (Olympic tennis player and Wimbledon ladies doubles champion). His older brother John Shepherd-Barron was the inventor of the ATM.[1] Richard was educated at Eaton House Prep School in Belgravia and Stowe School in Buckinghamshire. Richard completed his National Service in 1955-1957 with the 1st The Royal Dragoons (now Blues and Royals), based in Wesendorf, Germany.
Career
Motor racing: 1958-1963
Richard began his motor racing career in 1958 with a Fiat-Abarth 750 in club and national events.[2] His next car was an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, racing around the UK and Europe in 42 events from 1959-1960, coming 2nd in the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix 1300cc class at Spa.[3]
Richard's most famous result was Le Mans 1962 in the factory Morgan Plus 4 Supersport "TOK 258" with Chris Lawrence when they won the 2 Litre GT class, coming 13th. The overall race was won by Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien in a Ferrari 330. The story of TOK's 1962 success can be read in a short book titled Morgan Winner at Le Mans: The Story of TOK 258, written by Richard Shepherd-Barron and Ronnie Price.[4]
Post-motor racing
Richard worked for Alfa Romeo GB Ltd from 1963-1967, helping to establish a sales team in the UK. He later worked with Joseph Billingham engineering company in Cradley Heath, UK, as a sales and marketing director (1970-1978)[5] before working as a European sales manager for TPI, a transport vehicle body panel manufacturer based in Haverhill, UK (1978-1983). Richard began working as an agricultural journalist in 2000 and continues to this day, contributing to titles such as Vegetable Farmer, South East Farmer, Fruit Grower and Commercial Greenhouse Grower.[6] From 2005-2023, Richard also held a part-time senior social researcher position with Kantar Group.
Personal life
Richard married Elizabeth (Penny) Anne Kennedy in 1960, daughter of Maurice & Vera Kennedy. Richard and Penny have two children, Christopher (b.1964) & Nicola (b.1968, married Nicholas Fenton in 1997), and six grandchildren. He lives in Alderton, Suffolk, UK.
