The Richwood-North Union Public Library (RNUPL) is a public library located in Richwood, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1915 and is a member of the Serving Every Ohioan Consortium.

Richwood Library Association

The Richwood Library Association was an early book association created in 1882. A meeting was held at the Richwood Methodist Episcopal Church to discuss its formation. The officers of the association included: A.J. Blake, president; Lizzie King, vice president; P.R. Mills, secretary; G.B. Hamilton, treasurer; and Robert Smith, librarian. Citizens of Richwood could subscribe to the association for $3; of which amount $2.50 was expended for the purchase of new books and bookcases. The additional 50 cents allowed for their share of the incidental expenses.

On motion, a committee of five were appointed to assist in selecting books for the association. The committee included: P.R. Mills, A. Watson, J.P. Brookins, J.D. Slemmons, and Robert Smith.[2] The association was considered a precursor to the formation of the Richwood-North Union Public Library.

History

In 1915, the Richwood-North Union Public Library was established as a free public library to serve the community. The first library board was organized on January 26, 1915. It was located on the second floor of the Hastings Building located on Franklin Street. The building was a three-story structure situated beside the Richwood Banking Company. The Franz Millinery shop occupied the first floor.[3] It was reported that the library had 635 books in the collection, with 150 loaned from the State Library of Ohio. The library formally opened to the public on April 8, 1915.[4]

In 1920, the library moved to the Vaughan property located on Blagrove St. behind the Richwood Banking Company. The library board purchased the building for $1,080.[5] One half of the purchase price ($850) was donated to the library by Mrs. Elizabeth Copp (1851-1926) of Richwood.[6]

Due to the effects of the Great Depression, the First National Bank of Richwood had been permanently closed in 1935. The library board offered the bank $2,500 to purchase the building, and the offer was accepted on March 24, 1936.[7]

That location served the library well until 40 years later, when a new, larger location was needed. In 1971, the library purchased the property located on East Ottawa Street for $15,000.[8] A brand-new building began construction and was opened on May 28, 1974. The total cost of the brick structure was around $156,000. The new facility was five times bigger than the bank building. The library at the time of opening housed around 40,000 books in the collection.[9]

Today, the Richwood-North Union Public Library offers a wide range of services to the community, including access to books, magazines, and newspapers, as well as computers, internet access, and educational programs for all ages. The library also partners with local schools and community organizations to provide resources and support for learning and literacy.
