Background.
The song was recorded during the sessions for Nine Inch Nails’ fourth studio album, With Teeth, which marked Trent Reznor’s return to releasing new studio material after a multi-year period of personal struggles and creative reevaluation. Unlike much of the album’s more aggressive, guitar-driven material, Right Where It Belongs developed as a sparse, atmospheric closing track built around minimal piano and subtle electronic textures. Another version song exists titled “Right Where It Belongs version 2” which features a more prominent electronic arrangement compared to the original piano-based mix. It replaces the sparse instrumentation with a fuller, more textured production that aligns more closely with the album’s industrial sound.
Writing And Recording
A demo for the song with the titled "Cages" evidently exists on a pre-release version of With Teeth titled “With Teeth Tentative Sequence 12.23.04”, which has not been shared.[1] Several lines from the song were found on some pages of the Bleedthrough website in late 2003.
Cover Versions
In June 2019, the anthology TV series Black Mirror aired the episode "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too", which featured versions of Head Like A Hole and Right Where It Belongs with new lyrics written by Charlie Brooker and recorded by Miley Cyrus, entitled "On A Roll" and "Right Where I Belong" respectively. Cyrus also recorded direct covers of both songs, all of which were sanctioned and approved by Reznor - a rarity for any cover of Nine Inch Nails. The songs were recorded and released under the name "Ashley O", Cyrus' character name in the episode. The band also released a collaborative t-shirt on their website, featuring Brooker's new lyrics.
