Rikako Akiyoshi (秋吉 理香子, Akiyoshi Rikako) is a Japanese author. She studied literature at Waseda University and received her Master’s degree in Film and TV Production from Loyola Marymount University. Her debut work Snow Flower won the Yahoo! JAPAN literature prize and was adapted into a short film. She is the author of several works of fiction. The Dark Maidens has also been adapted into a movie.[1]

Career

Literary influences

Akiyoshi's early inspirations include Camus, Kafka, and Osamu Dazai; discovering them when she was 11 years old and influencing her to pursue writing as a career.[2] However, she initially considered her career to be that of a "serious literature" writer and not a mystery writer until an editor approached her after reading Snow Flower, and suggested that the mystery genre would be a better fit.[3]

In 2014 "Dead Back After School" (Futaba), "Virgin" (Futaba) in 2015, "scheduled suicide date" in 2016 (Tokyo Soumoto Co., Ltd.) was announced. The latest work is "absolute justice" (16 Gentosha).

  • Snow Flower was Rikako Akiyoshi's debut work.[5][2]
  • The short story won the third Yahoo! JAPAN literature prize in 2008, which was then published as a novel in 2009 by Shogakukan Bunko.[5][2]

  • The story was initially serialized in Futabasha's Shōsetsu Suiri magazine, from October 2012 through January 2013[9], before being published as a novel in June 2013.[10][11][12]
  • The novel was re-released in Futaba Bunko (June 2016)[13][14], and again in Futabasha Junior Bunko (March 2017)[15] with cover art and illustrations done by booota[16], which would become the version localized for English audiences.[9][17]
  • Futabasha's KoiYui digitally published a two-volume manga adaptation by Yuna Anisaki in March 2015.[18][11][19]
  • The novel inspired a live-action film in 2017.[20][21] Anime screenwriter Mari Okada wrote the script as her first live-action project.[11][22]
