Rin Tueny Mabor is a South Sudanese politician who currently holds the position of Governor of Lakes State. He was appointed to this role by President Salva Kiir Mayardit through a republican decree issued on June 8, 2021.[1]
Mabor's political career prior to his appointment as Governor of Lakes State includes serving as Governor for the now-defunct Eastern Lakes State, as well as serving as Chief of Military Intelligence in the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF).[2][3]

In terms of accomplishments, prior to Mabor's appointment as Governor of Lakes State, the region had experienced a prolonged period of communal conflicts resulting from retaliation attacks, clashes over scarce resources such as pastures and water, and cattle raiding. These conflicts resulted in a significant loss of life. However, under Mabor's leadership, the security situation in Lakes State has improved. Mabor has also been recognized for his efforts in this regard, receiving the title of "Governor of the Year" from the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization in 2022[4], and being listed among the top 20 South Sudanese by Hot in Juba.[5]
Mabor has also been praised by President Salva Kiir Mayardit and citizens for his efforts to engage youth in the cattle camps in the disarmament process. Additionally, Mabor has spoken out against extrajudicial killings, which were alleged to have been committed by authorities in Lakes and Warrap State.[6] This statement from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan sparked peaceful protests in Rumbek, the capital of Lakes State. Mabor called on leaders to reconcile, particularly in Juba, in order to promote peace throughout South Sudan.[7]

Rin Tueny Mabor is also known for strongly opposing early child marriage among state residents. He stated that such an awareness campaign was desperately needed in his state, and that such practises must be stopped.[8]
He accused government officials of misusing and stealing public funds intended for education.[9] After Governor Rin Tueny Mabor formed a committee to review and clear repeated or ghost names on pay sheets of the state's government institutions, the government of Lakes State revealed in January 2022 that it was able to recover over SSP 7 million spent on salaries of ghost workers.[10]
