Rise of Cultures is a free-to-play city-building game, developed and published by Hamburg-based InnoGames that was initially developed for iOS and Android devices, but is now also available for browser.[2][3]

Concept[edit]

Rise of Cultures is a progression-driven game that allows players to build multiple cities, discover new civilisations, and lead them through the ages of mankind by means of trade, war, and diplomacy.[4]

Gameplay[edit]

Gameplay starts in the Stone Age with a tutorial that takes the form of a fellow caveman named Felix who describes the basics of the game, gives advice, and provides task quest lines. Workers need to be instructed to set up new buildings, starting with a rural farm that - like all buildings in the game - needs to be placed on a grid area that is under the player's control. Buildings and building upgrades boosts the ability to produce and gather resources. The more resources need to be gathered, the more workers are required. Workers need to be kept happy to make them more efficient. Resources are - among other things - used for research, and continued research is the basis for advancement through the game's eras, such as the Minoan Era, the Roman Empire, or the Byzantine Era. Upon advancement to a new era, all previously erected buildings are automatically brought into the new era as well. Besides the civilisation-building mechanic, Rise of Cultures also features a Player versus environment campaign that starts with units such as caveman spearmen and rock-throwers. Successful encounters expand the map area controlled by the player and unlock new ways of generating resources. As the player's civilisation progresses through the ages, more advanced allied and enemy battle units with distinct advantages and disadvantages are introduced. Their battle formations can be influenced before every encounter so as to maximise their effectiveness, and powerful unit-specific cooldown-based abilities can be used to turn the tide of battle. Successful battle encounters generate research points, money, food, and more. As the game progresses, new abilities such as joining alliances of other players, trading, hunting for treasures, or constructing World Wonders become available.[5][6]

Updates[edit]

  • On September 15, 2022, the world wonders were revised. Previously, they had to be located within the city. In the new version, there is a maximum of four places for them and one place each in the allied cultures.[7]
  • On October 28, 2022, the open beta browser version of the game was released.[8]
  • On December 5, 2022, the season pass was introduced. For about a month there are different tasks to be done every day.[9]
  • On March 27, 2023, the Alliance City feature was introduced. The city can be built together with other players from the same alliance.[10]

Development[edit]

Rise of Cultures was built with Unity.[11] The official announcement of the game, which went into soft launch on February 15, 2021 (Google Play), respectively February 17, 2021 (App Store), was made on January 25, 2022.[12][2]

Reception[edit]

On August 10, 2023, the game had an average review score of 4.3/5 stars on Google Play and 4.7/5 stars on the App Store.[13][14]

Awards[edit]

2023: Nomination for the Deutscher Computerspielpreis award in the "Best Mobile Game" category.[15]

Business model[edit]

The entire game can be played for free, but players may opt for in-game purchases.[16] Hence, the business model corresponds to the Freemium model.
