Rishank Devadiga is an Indian kabaddi player who plays in the Pro Kabaddi League. He will be playing for UP Yoddha in Season 7 of VIVO Pro Kabaddi. Born on 3 February, 1994 in Santacruz, Mumbai, Devadiga has consistently ranked amongst the best raiders in the league and has earned enormous plaudits from all quarters for his performances over the years. Known for his Do-or-Die raids, Devadiga is currently among the top five in VIVO Pro Kabaddi’s all-time Do-or-Die raid points (121) chart.[1]

Early life[edit]

Rishank began playing the sport when he was seven years old and initially struggled while pursuing his dream of making it as a kabaddi player. His family wasn’t well off, forcing him to end his studies early and take up a job as a waiter at the Leela Hotel. However, his determination to succeed saw him get a chance to represent the Mumbai district kabaddi team before getting his first break with Dena Bank, where he won the best player award in his first tournament. He has also played for Bharat Petroleum and the Maharashtra team before getting selected in the Pro Kabaddi League.[2][3]

Kabaddi Career:[edit]

Pro Kabaddi career

Season 1[edit]

U Mumba selected him for the inaugural edition of VIVO Pro Kabaddi and Devadiga didn’t disappoint. He along with Anup Kumar made Mumbai a potent raid force and a hard team to beat. He scored 64 raid points and 13 tackle points as U Mumba agonizingly lost the final to Jaipur Pink Panthers.[4]

Season 2[edit]

Despite a dip in raid points in the second season, Devadiga played a crucial role for U Mumba in their title-winning season. He managed just 44 raid points but was their best raider in do-or-die situations and also contributed in defence with 14 tackle points at a tackle strike rate of 53.84%.[4]

Season 3[edit]

The third edition of VIVO Pro Kabaddi was Devadiga’s best for U Mumba in terms of points scored. He ended the season with 106 raid points to put him second on the list of top raiders for the campaign. Devadiga also scored 9 tackle points, which included a super tackle and was Mumbai’s leading do-or-die raider.[4]

Season 4[edit]

Devadiga was once again U Mumba’s most efficient Do-or-Die raider in Season 4. However, he didn’t manage to score as many raid points as the previous season and ended the campaign on 70 raid points with a raid strike rate of 49.64%.[4]

Season 5[edit]

In Season 5, he was signed by UP Yoddha for a sum of Rs. 45.50 lakh. Devadiga repaid the faith UP Yoddha showed in him by playing the best Kabaddi of his career. He scored 5 tackle points and 165 raid points with a raid strike rate of 54.09%. Devadiga, in fact, was one of the best players for UP Yoddha and was crucial to their qualification for the playoffs. His 28 points in a single game against Jaipur Pink Panthers in his first match as captain in Season 5 was his most impressive performance.[4]

Season 6[edit]

After impressing UP Yoddha, Devadiga was re-signed for the sixth season for a mammoth sum of Rs 1.11 crores. However, his second campaign with the team wasn’t as successful as the first. He finished the season with 100 raid points and 4 tackle points.[4]

International

Devadiga created history when he led Maharashtra to the 2017-18 Senior National Kabaddi Championship after 11 years. On the back of his performances in the Nationals, he was chosen to be a part of the Indian team that won the 2018 Kabaddi Masters title in Dubai.[2]
