Rita Ghosh (born 2 July 1979) is an Indian music and art critic, Rabindra Sangeet practitioner, and textile designer based in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Her work spans music criticism, vocal performance, textile design, and arts education. She is known for her non-sensational approach to criticism, with an emphasis on musical structure, discipline, and attentive listening.
Early life and education
Rita Ghosh was born on 2 July 1979 to Naresh Chandra Ghosh and Kundalata Ghosh. She grew up in West Bengal, where she developed an early interest in music and the arts.
She received formal training in Indian classical music under Ustad Sahadat Rana Khan of North Bengal and trained in Rabindra Sangeet under Malay Shankar Chattopadhyay. Her musical education was further shaped by her studies at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, an institution closely associated with the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.
Ghosh holds a Master’s degree in History from the University of Kalyani (2017) and a Master’s degree in Textile Design from Visva-Bharati University (2018).
Music and criticism
Ghosh is active as a music and art critic, contributing essays and reviews to local newspapers and magazines. Her critical writing focuses on classical and Tagore-based musical traditions, often foregrounding form, discipline, and the listening experience rather than performance spectacle.
Alongside her writing, she continues to practise vocal music and has performed Rabindra Sangeet at regional cultural festivals in West Bengal.
Textile design and arts education
In addition to her work in music and criticism, Ghosh is a trained textile designer. She is associated with the arts through exhibitions, workshops, and educational initiatives.
She founded Bichitra Art School, an art education venture focused on visual arts and design. Through this platform, she has organised workshops and participated in exhibitions, including international exhibitions. She has also been invited to exhibit her work in Bangladesh.
