Rita Hasselbach Assad, (1948 – January 10, 2020), popularly known as Tia Rita (aunt Rita), was a Brazilian swimmer and swimming coach.[1] She competed for Brazil internationally during the early 1960s, including at the 1963 Pan American Games, and held Brazilian and South American records in relay events. After her competitive career, she founded the swimming school of Esporte Clube Pinheiros, where she worked as a technical supervisor for more than five decades and became an influential figure in the development of swimming in Brazil.
Career
Assad competed for Esporte Clube Pinheiros and represented Brazil in international swimming competitions during the early 1960s. She was part of the Brazilian relay team that set a South American record in the 4×100-metre medley relay.
In 1960 she finished as the South American runner-up in the 100-metre butterfly. The following year she set the Brazilian national record in the 100-metre breaststroke with a time of 1:23.6.[2][1][3]
Assad was a member of the Brazilian team at the 1963 Pan American Games.[2][3]
Tia Rita, as she became known, founded the Esporte Clube Pinheiros Swimming School in 1967, where she served as a special technical supervisor for over 50 years. [2][3]
Death
Tia Rita died on January 10, 2020, at the age of 72.[2]
Impact and legacy
Today, the Esporte Clube Pinheiros swimming school bears Tia Rita's name. [2][1][3]
Due to her importance on Pinheiros history, she received the title of honorary member of the club.
