Ritch Lau (born January 21, 1986) (simplified Chinese: 刘肇麟; traditional Chinese: 劉肇麟) is a Canadian politician who has served on Markham City Council since 2022. Lau currently represents Ward 2. He was first elected in the 2022 municipal election in Ward 2.[1]

Background

Lau was born in Hong Kong. His family immigrated to Canada in 2000 when he was 14. Lau went to St. Andrew's College, Aurora and York Mills Collegiate Institute for high school. He graduated from University of Toronto Scarborough with a specialist degree with honours in Mental Health Studies. He also completed a diploma of Early Childhood Education from Centennial College. Lau worked as a radio host, news reporter, and later TV news anchor before running for office in 2022. Lau's family currently lives in Markham Ward 2.

Before entering politics he was the president of Active Community Engagement, a Non-profit organization officially registered in the province of Ontario.[2]

Political career

In May 2022, Lau registered as a Markham city councillor candidate. He ran as a candidate in Ward 2 to replace Alan Ho who left his seat to run for York Region Council. Lau was elected to Markham City Council in the 2022 municipal elections. [1]
