Riyad Joucka

Riyad Joucka is an architect and the founder of MEAN (Middle East Architecture Network).[1] He has worked as an architect in both New York and Hong Kong and he founded his company, MEAN, in 2015. [2] MEAN is a Dubai- based architecture practice that uses innovative solutions for building.[3][4] They were commissioned by Audi to design their Audi Innovation Hub.[5]

Early life[edit]

Joucka was born and raised in Amman to parents who are both architects. His grandfather was the Syrian painter Hahmoud Hammad.[6] He emigrated to Canada at the age of 17 and studied architecture at Carleton University in Ottawa. He moved to London where he got his Master's degree in architecture from the Emergent Technologies and Design program at the Architectural Association's School of Architecture in London. [3]

Career[edit]

Joucka has experience developing complex structures and using building technologies in his designs. In 2012, he created a structure in Hong Kong called the Shell Star which used digital modelling, simulation and fabrication tools in its creation.[6] In 2019, he created a 3D printed pavilion that was made from 30,000 recycled water bottles at the Dubai International Financial Center.[7] He designed a drinking water fountain for the Dubai Expo 2020 which harvests water from the desert air. [4]

He has taught architectural design workshops in Paris, Penang, Shanghai, Tehran and Santiago. He is the director of the annual AA Visiting School Dubai.[8]

He was a juror for the first Audi Innovation Award.[3]
