Rob Charles (born 17 September 1963 in Nottingham) is an English Radio DJ, who has worked on stations across the North of England including KFM Radio, Rock FM and 105.4 Century Radio. He is best known nationally as the fictional Breakfast DJ on Forever FM in Peter Kay's Car Share.[1]
Life and career[edit]
After a brief spell in Hospital Radio in Wythenshawe, Charles began his radio career in 1982 when he joined the then pirate station KFM, before moving to Ireland to work on the commercial station Radio West, this followed with stints on offshore stations including Voice of Peace in Israel and Radio Caroline[2], before returning to the UK to work on in-store radio in Manchester and Liverpool.
After it was awarded a licence in 1990, Charles rejoined KFM, where he hosted the stations Breakfast show. He stayed with the station until 1992 when he joined Rock FM in Preston and begun presenting a variety of programmes for 16 years on the station, including the stations Breakfast and Drivetime show respectively. In addition to his Rock FM commitments, Charles also presented Breakfast for Magic 999 between November 2004 and October 2009.[3] For three years he also hosted the Drivetime show on 105.4 Century Radio.
In 2011, Charles joined the Accrington based station The Bee, where he fronted the stations Breakfast Show for four years.[4] He left in December 2015, in order to join Sandgrounder Radio in Southport.[5][6] He hosted the Weekday Drivetime show and also was the stations head of music,[7] but left in October 2016.[8]
On television, Charles provided the voice for Mike, the fictional Breakfast DJ on Forever FM in the two seasons of Peter Kay's Car Share.[9]
Charles made a return to radio in January 2018, on the community station City Beat in Preston[10], he also began hosting a weekend show on Radio Tamworth.[11] As of 2021, Charles currently host Breakfast on All Oldies Radio and Drivetime on Liverpool Live 247. He also hosts a show on TKO in Spain and a syndicated show Songs That Don’t Get Played On The Radio Anymore.[12][13]
Personal life[edit]
Charles is married and has two daughters and a son. He currently lives in Chorley.
