Rob Alan Prior (born June 9, 1964) is a Hungarian-American celebrity artist,[1] experiential painter,[2] screenwriter, and director.[3][4][1]
Background and education[edit]
Hailing from Los Angeles,[2] Prior was born to Alan and Nancy. Born in a family of artists, his parents started training him to become an artist at 2.[3] He began his career as a storyteller through his artistic skills at a young age.[5] Prior had his debut work published at 13 and his international piece published at 15.[6] He sold his first piece of art for $1,000.[7][8]
Prior graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. He completed his Master's in Fine Arts degree from the University of Toledo.[9]
Career[edit]
Prior paints with two hands and eyes closed. He hosts live painting events where he paints pop culture icons or fine art pieces.[4][3][2][1]
In April 2022, Prior created the portraits of the NFL football draftees, live during the draft, a set of which was auctioned off by the NFL Foundation.[2][6][10][7][4]
Prior's live painting of Virgil Abloh was bought for $1M by Daniel Petit, a real estate executive at Art Basel, in 2021.[1] He sold a pair of portraits of Canelo Alvarez, acclaimed at Art Basel in Miami in 2021 for $500,000.[2][11]
In 2015, Prior created a Star Wars-themed diptych during a live exhibition at BoxLunch's Grand Opening in Los Angeles, CA.[12]
Prior has worked with Marvel, D.C., Kevin Eastman, and Image Comics as a comic book artist.[4] His most notable credits include Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Spawn, Terminator, Deep Space 9, Evil Ernie, Melting Pot, Lady Death, Game of Thrones,[3] and Heavy Metal.[5]
Prior designed the art for the cut sequences of the Ghost Rider video game.[1][5]
He was the VP of Creative for Heavy Metal.[5]
