Robb Composers' Symposium

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Robb Composers' Symposium is an international festival of contemporary classical music at the University of New Mexico.

Symposium

The John Donald Robb Symposium is the premiere annual contemporary music event in the Southwest, bringing international composers and performers to the University of New Mexico for several days of concerts.[1][2] The Symposium is one of the longest ongoing festivals of new music in the nation.[3]

Notable guests have included Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Raven Chacon, Chen Yi, George Crumb, Julio Estrada, Lou Harrison, Karel Husa, Ernst Krenek, Libby Larson, Lei Liang, John Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Hilda Paredes, Vincent Persichetti, Ned Rorem, Cecil Taylor, James Tenney, Joan Tower, Christian Wolff.[4]

Co-director Peter Gilbert says, “The symposium is, at its heart, about discovering something new in the world of classical music – an important composer, a new way of making or even thinking about sound, or perhaps a beautiful, mysterious, or surprising experience."[2]

Recent Themes

Since taking over the Symposium in 2013, co-directors Karola Obermueller and Peter Gilbert have centered around interdisciplinary themes. In 2016 the Symposium celebrated the influence of Native American composers and culture on contemporary music.[5]. In 2015, the theme was Musical Retellings, exploring the influence of folk music on classical composers.[6] and featured music of Chen Yi.[7] In 2014, the Symposium included an opera and panels about human trafficking and the role of the arts in contemporary society. [8] [9] 2013 explored the intersection of music and movement, celebrating the anniversary of The Rite of Spring [10]

History

The Symposium was started in 1972 by professor William Wood and has occurred annually and uninterrupted since then, making it one of the longest-running festivals of new music in the world.

One featured guest was invited to each symposium until 1989. In honor of the university’s centennial that year, the symposium honored 40 UNM Music Department alumni and friends, with special tributes going to John Donald Robb, former dean of the UNM College of Fine Arts. That year, the Robb Concert was established, beginning a tradition in which a composition of the former dean would be performed at every symposium. A decade later, the symposium was renamed the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium to honor the former dean who had been instrumental in developing the music program at UNM. The Symposium has continued to celebrate Robb's legacy both as a composer and ethnomusicologist.[11]

As the Department of Music faculty became more involved, a full schedule of daytime masterclasses and lectures featuring visiting guests was introduced, providing exciting opportunities for students. The symposium is now presented jointly by the UNM Department of Music and the John Donald Robb Musical Trust. [12][4]
