Robert B. Downing (also known as Robert Browning Downing) is an American hospitality and residence management executive who has served as the 12th White House Chief Usher since December 1, 2021. As Chief Usher, he oversees the operations of the Executive Residence at the White House, managing the permanent residence staff and coordinating the day-to-day functioning of the presidential household. He is responsible for the administration, maintenance, preservation, and ceremonial activities of the Executive Residence, one of the most historically significant official residences in the United States.

Career

Early Career

Public information regarding Downing's early life, education, and family background is limited. Before his appointment as Chief Usher, he built a career in hospitality, event management, and historic property administration in Washington, D.C.

Downing worked with Susan Gage Caterers, a prominent Washington-based catering and events company known for serving government officials, diplomats, cultural institutions, and nonprofit organizations. During his tenure, he gained experience in managing large-scale events, coordinating hospitality operations, and overseeing service staff for high-profile functions.

He later served as manager of Evermay, a historic Federal-style mansion in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. In this role, Downing was responsible for the property's operations, preservation, and event coordination.
