Robert B. Fried (born September 9, 1978) is an American digital forensic consultant, investigator, business executive, and author. He has written several books on digital forensics and contributes to publications in the field.[1]

Early life and education

Fried was born on September 9, 1978, in Brooklyn, New York. His father worked as a bank executive, and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up in East Meadow, New York, and later attended the University of New Haven, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in forensic science in 2001 and a Master of Science in forensic science in 2002.

Career

In 2002, Fried worked as a graduate student intern with SEARCH Group before joining the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) in Fairmont, West Virginia, as a computer crime specialist. He remained with NW3C until 2005.

Since 2005, Fried has worked in various consulting roles with professional services firms, focusing on electronic evidence, including its identification, preservation, collection, and examination. He has also provided written and oral testimony in this area.

Fried teaches in the M.S. Investigations Graduate Program at the University of New Haven as an adjunct faculty member and serves on the program’s Board of Advisors. In 2024, he was named a Fellow at the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. He also sits on the EC-Council Global Advisory Board for the Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certification.

He holds several professional certifications and is licensed as a Professional Investigator in Michigan, as well as a Private Investigator in New York and South Carolina.

Publications and writing

Fried is the author of the Forensic Data Collections 2.0 series, published between 2022 and 2025, which addresses topics related to digital forensics.[2]

Fried has also been involved in the organization of the Symposium on E-Crime with Henry C. Lee and has appeared as a speaker at professional events and on podcasts.[3]

Personal life

Fried lives in New York with his wife and three children.
