Robert C. Watson (born November 21, 1890) was an American lawyer, engineer, and government official who served as the United States Commissioner of Patents from 1953 to 1961.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and career

Watson was born in Washington, D.C., the son of a patent attorney. He earned a civil engineering degree from Lehigh University, worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1917. He served in the United States Army during World War I and later practiced patent law in Washington for about thirty years.[2]

Commissioner of Patents

President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Watson commissioner of patents, and he took the oath of office on February 18, 1953. The USPTO notes that his administration addressed a backlog of patent applications and improved classification practices.[2]
