Robert Houston Eggers, born on July 7, 1983, is a prominent American filmmaker and production designer renowned for his innovative yet controversial approach. Best known for his work in historical horror, Eggers has written and directed acclaimed films such as "The Witch" (2015) and "The Lighthouse" (2019). Additionally, he directed and co-wrote the historical fiction epic "The Northman" (2022), showcasing his commitment to both storytelling and historical authenticity.

Born in New York City in 1983 to Kelly Houston, Eggers' early years were marked by a move to Laramie, Wyoming. His mother later married Walter Eggers, and the family expanded with the arrival of twins, Max and Sam. Relocating to Lee, New Hampshire, in 1990, Eggers' stepfather's role as a provost at the University of New Hampshire played a pivotal role in their move. In 2001, Eggers moved to New York City to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where he discovered his passion for design, direction, and theatre. Inspired by his New England childhood, he frequently visited the Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts, while crafting his first feature.

Eggers initially immersed himself in theatre production in New York before transitioning to film. His directorial debut, "The Witch" (2015), earned critical acclaim and commercial success. Subsequent to the success of "The Witch," Eggers directed and co-wrote "The Lighthouse" (2019), receiving widespread acclaim for the period piece. In 2022, he released the Viking epic "The Northman" with an ensemble cast.
Eggers gained attention for his announced remake of the 1922 silent film "Nosferatu," showcasing his bold choices in film projects. Despite initial plans, he opted to delay the Nosferatu remake, directing "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman" first. Currently, Eggers is developing a miniseries on Rasputin's life and a medieval film titled "The Knight."

Married to Alexandra Shaker, a clinical psychologist he has known since childhood, Eggers and Shaker have a son named Houston. Residing in Brooklyn, New York City, Eggers balances his thriving career with a fulfilling personal life.
