Robert Frederick Whitehead (February 28, 1869 – August 24, 1951) was an American lawyer and government official who served as the United States Commissioner of Patents from 1920 to 1921.[1][2][3][4]
Early life and career
Whitehead was born near Lovingston, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and pursued specialized study in mathematics at Johns Hopkins University. Before entering federal service, he taught school and worked at the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia.[2]
Patent Office
Whitehead joined the Patent Office as a fourth assistant examiner in 1902. He studied law, was admitted to the District of Columbia bar, and later served in the Interference Division, as a law examiner, and as assistant commissioner before becoming commissioner of patents.[2]
