Robert George Andrew Cruise (born Robert Michael Dobo; 6 July 1978) is a Canadian historian and author whose work blends character‑driven historical fiction with accessible narrative history.[1] His published fiction includes Temporal Revolution, Bird of Prey, and The Ruins, while his non‑fiction debut Understanding Canada: A Guide to Canadian Politics aims to demystify federal structures for general readers.[2] Cruise is developing a six‑volume history entitled *The Unquiet North*; Volume I, Dominion: Canada Before the Storm, 1896–1914, is slated for release in May 2025.[3]
Early life and education
Cruise was born at Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe, Ontario, to Steven Andrew Dobo and Connie Dianne Dickey.[1] He spent his childhood in Barrie and moved to Orillia at age 30.[1] After illness ended a thirteen‑year career in land surveying, he studied Modern European History and Political Science at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus.[1]
Career
Land surveying (1990s–2010s)
Before turning to writing, Cruise worked throughout central Ontario as a land‑survey technician, producing boundary and topographic reports.[1]
Writing (2020s–present)
Convalescence provided the opportunity to pursue long‑held writing ambitions.[1] His fiction is noted for vivid settings and an emphasis on ordinary lives amid upheaval, while his non‑fiction combines archival research with narrative clarity.[2]
