Robert Kateera
Robert Kateera (born 1995) is a Ugandan professional pilot based in Canada. He is the president of the Trudeau Youth Council (East Africa Chapter) and a representative of the Obama Youth Council.
Early life and education
Kateera was born in Mbarara, Uganda, where he lived with his parents and siblings. He did his primary school at Uganda Martyrs Primary School before joining Taibah College High School, where he finished A-level in 2012. Makerere University offered him a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, but he instead joined Kajjansi Flying School, where he obtained a Private Pilot License (PPL). In 2014, he relocated to Canada and joined Toronto Airways Canadian Flight Academy. His first qualification was the Single Engine Instrument Rating, and later the Multi-Engine Instrument Rating. He is currently training with Air Canada after attaining the Commercial Pilot License (CPL).
Awards and recognition
Kateera is a representative of the Obama Youth Council, an initiative whose goal is to create opportunities for the youth globally to participate in the open government community and demonstrate how it can be used to solve real problems. In 2017, he was nominated for the Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) Harry Jerome Awards, an annual honouring ceremony that celebrates excellence and achievement in the Canadian Black community. In 2017, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recognised him as one of the excellent young Africans during a dinner to celebrate Canada-Africa relations. In 2019, he was elected president of the newly-formed Trudeau Youth Council (East Africa Chapter), a nonprofit organization that coaches youth aged 15 to 29 years in positive values, integrity, morals, and a desire to contribute to society. In 2018, The New Vision ranked Kateera among the Top 40 under 40 Achievers in Uganda.
