From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Robert J. Landy (born 1944) is an American drama therapist, professor, and author.

He is Professor Emeritus at New York University, where he helped establish the profession of drama therapy.[1] He is an author, theatre artist, songwriter, psychotherapist, and photographer.

Early life and education

Landy was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and grew up in Jersey City and the suburbs of New York City. He studied at Lafayette College, Brandeis University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he received an interdisciplinary doctorate in psychology, theatre, education, and English.[2]

Academic career

Landy began his academic career as a lecturer in theatre at California State University, Northridge. He later became a professor of Educational Theatre and Applied Psychology at NYU, where he developed the first MA program in drama therapy in the United States.[1] His research and writing in drama therapy include 11 books, starting with Drama Therapy: Concepts and Practices (1986), which was the first published text in the field.[1] He also co-authored two books on children's perception of God.[3] At NYU, he received the Distinguished Teaching Medal and awards for outstanding research.[4]

His work has been featured in the CBS-TV educational series Drama in Education, the documentary film Standing Tall, and the instructional video Three Approaches to Drama Therapy.[4] Landy's contributions are housed at the New York University Bobst Library in the Robert Landy Archive.[5]

Theatre and creative work

Outside of academia, Landy has worked in theatre, music, and photography. In New York City, he played Edgar in King Lear at the Roundabout Theatre, directed by Gene Feist. Critic A.D. Coleman, writing for the Village Voice (April 25, 1968), praised the production. He also appeared in the experimental theatre production Dracula: Sabbat at the Westbeth Theatre and co-created a performance piece at Franklin Furnace titled Men Are Circles, Men Are Spears.[4]

Landy wrote the book and lyrics for the musical God Lives in Glass, which has been performed in the United States.[3] He also created and directed the play Art, Hope, Redemption at the Stella Adler Theatre, which centers on the life of an artist who spent 25 years in prison.[4]

His music is available at The Vulture and the Lamb.[6] His recent photography work is featured at Art Without Boundaries.[7]
