Robert Leiner
Robert Leiner (born 1 August 1966 in Borås, Sweden) [1]is a Swedish electronic music producer and DJ based in Gothenburg that plays a pivotal part in the Swedish Techno scen[2] and the Belgian R&S Records history.[3]
History
Robert Leiner was born on 1 August 1966 in Borås, Sweden). Growing up with his mothers Grand Piano and his brothers interest in music. At an early age he was inspired by the music of artists such as Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Jean Michel Jarre, and Kraftwerk. Leiner began DJing at the age of 15 and start spending time in the local record stores to discovering new music. As DJ he got to play many different styles from Disco, Funk, Soul, Rock, Pop, New Wave, Hip Hop, Italo Disco, Electro and when the first House and Acid House music started to appear he was one of the first DJ's in Sweden to get hold of the records and play. He has a big interest in Synthesizers and Drum Machines and got his first synth in 1984, a Kawai SX-240.
Early Life (1984 - 1990)
In 1985 Leiner was running an Italo Disco import company with a friend importing vinyl records from Disco Magic Records, Il Discotto Records and others and sold to local record shops. The same year he gets his first music software Steinberg Pro-16 for Commodore 64 computer to sequence his music on. In 1987 he opens a tobacco and gambling shop and takes over Sanny X studio in Gothenburg.[4] He had several dj residency jobs in the Gothenburgs club scen during the 80's like Draupner that had live acts like Skinny Puppy, Pop Will Eat Itself, Union Carbide, Ginger Baker + Jonas Hellborg, The Swans .[5] In 1989 he started the new techno project Andromatic and made several live performances in Scandinavia.[6]
In 1990 he wrote and produced 2 songs for the Canadian artist Louisa Florio that was a showcase on the Swedish music show Top Gear.[7] [8] He later the same year becomes studio manager, artist and producer for Itchy Music Production[9] with a small studio at the former Gothenburg Sounds Studio for a short period.
Career
After his first releases in his homeland Sweden[10], he moved to Ghent, Belgium, and began working for R&S Records as a studio manager and artist.[11]When he signs for R&S in 1992 he becomes Swedens first Techno artist and dj to gain international status paving the way for Swedish Techno.
Releasing early productions as Source and The Source Experience,[12] including the 1993 album 'Organised Noise' and the more ambient leaning 'Visions of the Past'[13] under his own name in 1994 for R&S sub-label Apollo Records.[14]
The Ohm Years (1991 - 1992)
Ohm Records was a sub label to Telegram Records in Stockholm Sweden and was managed by Klas Lunding. In 1991 Leiner got invited to release his music and to help build and manage Dreamstate Studio for the label. Leiner's first releases for the label was his first ep Pure Energy as Andromatic and his is first ep as Source in 1992. He also produced, mixed and co-wrote for other artist on the label under the name "Spirit" like Cerebus (Cari Lekebusch), Cre8ors ( Blanco, Cari Lekebusch), Lithium 6 (Renegade). The label folded after Leiner left for R&S Records in 1992.
The R&S Years (1992 - 1997)
Roberts first recording for R&S was released as an untitled blue label promo and resulted from a live jam. It saw the light of day in the summer 1992 and immediately found its way to the worlds influential DJs; it is now highly sought after, as no more than a few hundred copies were ever pressed! It was recorded and mixed at Dream State Studio Stockholm in 1991 and was followed by his appearance on In Order to Dance, Vol. 4 as Neuromancer. The following year, he issued his debut LP as Source, Organized Noise. After releasing a masterpiece of pure acid techno in keeping with contemporary work by the Aphex Twin and others, Leiner threw a curveball: Visions of the Past, released as himself. The LP alternated between passages of ambient warmth echoing the Orb with more disturbing elements which signalled a turn in the flavor of electronica. Other than a single for the album though, it was the last work Leiner released as himself. Instead he began recording as the Source Experience in 1994 (the Source banner was dropped when an English pop/dance combo carrying the same name threatened action), issuing Different Journeys on R&S and undertaking a grand DJ tour of Europe during 1995. Two additional twelves appeared during the year ("Synaesthesia" and "Zyklus") but Leiner kept much closer to the underground than during his early career.
During the R&S years he also made collaborations with Cari Lekebusch Fred 1, Cisco Ferreira as B.C The Advent[15], Mark BellLFO[16] [17], Lenny Dee[18], Frederik Brattlöf (Renegade)[19] and Mårten Attling amongst others.
He left R&S in 1997 and has since continued to release on Feebite Records, De:tuned Records, Touched Music, Börft Records and on his Bandcamp. As both creator and DJ, Robert Leiner gives breathtaking visions of a far higher and different level than just the norm. His commitment to exposing us all to stimulating and challenging music marks Robert Leiner as a major figure in modern music, a fact that this is beyond discussion. Robert Leiner is an artist who doesn’t perform electronic music: he channels it.

Live
Robert Leiner had his first live show in 1986 at Club Akadem located at the top floor in a big shopping center and was known during the Italodisco period in Gothenburg using Steinberg Pro-16 sequencer software on a Commodore 64, E-mu Emax, DX7, Ensoniq ESQ-1 playing Italostyle music. When he adopted the name Andromatic in 1988 and later Source he was one of the first artist in Scandinavia to play live in Clubs and Raves. After moving to Belgium in 1992 he became one of the most sought after live acts playing all over the world on festivals, Clubs and Raves sharing the stage with artists like The Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Carl Cox. Leiner continues to this day refining his live set and never do the same show twice.

Nordic Tekno Symposium. A live recording of collaboration project including Robert Leiner (Source) (S), Thomas & Tommy (Tournesol) (DK), Geir Jenssen (Biosphere) (N), Per Martinsen (Mental Overdrive) (N). Preformed live in a German WW2 cannon bunker in Kristiansand, Norway. The performance was conducted and mixed by Robert Leiner Light and projections by Chris Craig (The Orb). This event was a significant gathering for the Nordic electronic music scene during the mid-90s, emphasizing collaboration and technological innovation in music production.
