Robert Levi Foard
Robert Levi Foard was an American soldier and attorney based in Columbus, Texas. He enlisted in the Colorado County militia as a first lieutenant. He fought in Colonel Joseph Bate's Thirteenth Texan infantry, eventually reaching the rank of major on November 11, 1863.[1]
Early life
Born on January 18, 1831, in Cecil County, Maryland, his parents were Samuel Bayard Foard and Alice Rebecca Foard. He had two siblings: Laura and Samuel. In 1852, he was accepted into Princeton University.
Marriage
He married Georgina Foard in 1838, and they remained married until her death in 1866. Together they had two children, Mary and Arthur. Mary was born in 1850, and would die at only ten years old in 1860, while Arthur was born in 1857 and would die in 1871. In 1866, when Georgina died, Robert married Alice Foard. They had one child, Charles, who died in infancy, at only four months old. Foard adopted his nephew, Robert Jr, who was born in 1871 and would die childless in 1897.
Time in the Army
Foard enlisted in the Confederate Army upon the outbreak of the Civil War, fighting in the Colorado County's militia. He then went on to fight in the thirteenth Texan division, where he would go on to receive the rank of major general in November 1863.
Legacy
Foard County in Texas is named after Robert Levi Foard.
