Robert William Saswalo Shirley, 14th Earl Ferrers (born 29 December 1952), styled Viscount Tamworth from 1954 to 2012, is a British peer and chartered accountant.

Early life[edit]

Earl Ferrers was born on 29 September 1952. He was educated at Ampleforth College, Ampleforth, Yorkshire, England. He succeeded to the title of Earl Ferrers upon the death of his father, Robert Shirley, 13th Earl Ferrers, on 13 November 2012.[1]

Career[edit]

Shirley became a chartered accountant. In 1994, he co-founded Ruffer Investment Management, an investment management firm, with Jonathan Ruffer and Jane Tufnell.[2][3] The firm was renamed Ruffer LLP in 2004 and is now based at 80 Victoria Street, London.[4]

Philanthropy[edit]

Shirley serves on the Auckland Castle Trust.[5]

Personal life[edit]

Robert married Susannah Mary Sheepshanks, daughter of Charles Edward William Sheepshanks, on 21 June 1980. Their children are:

  • Lady Hermione Mary Annabel Shirley (b. 11 December 1982) she married Edward Crisp. They have two children:
    • Rose Elizabeth Mary Crisp (9 October 2016)
    • Robert John Simon Crisp (8 June 2019)
  • William Robert Charles Shirley, Viscount Tamworth (b. 10 December 1984) he married Camilla Lutyens. They have two daughters:
    • The Honorable Francesca Alice Hermione Shirley (7 June 2016)
    • The Honorable Amelie Mary Tanya Shirley (11 December 2018)
  • Hon. Frederick James Walter Shirley (b. 1990) he married Daisy Wall in 2018. They have one child:
    • Theodore James Timothy Shirley (3 June 2021)

The family country seat is Ditchingham Hall near the village of Ditchingham, south Norfolk.
