Robert Spearing

Robert Spearing is a British composer, born in London to a Welsh mother and an English father, who grew up in Surrey. He was educated at Cumnor House School, South Croydon and as a music scholar at Cranleigh School, where an inspirational music department under Jared Armstrong, Derek Bourgeois and Hilary Davan Wetton was formative. Simultaneously, the proximity of Guildford's vibrant musical life under enterprising conductor Vernon 'Tod' Handley became profoundly influential.

Robert trained at the Royal College of Music, London under Herbert Howells and Vernon Handley, later gaining a first class honours degree at the OU in literature, music and aesthetics, and a Doctorate in Musical Composition at the University of Birmingham under Vic Hoyland.

Symphony in one movement (No2) was commissioned by Vernon Handley, and subsequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The scena She Solus exists in 2 versions (one for tenor, one for baritone) both with piano. This was a BBC commission broadcast on BBC Radio 3, as was the Welsh Bestiary for oboe and piano, written for Nicholas Daniel and Julius Drake.

Teaching

Alongside his work as a composer, Robert has taught for a variety of musical institutions - notably The Purcell School, where he was assistant director, the RCM Junior Department, the Gloucester Academy of Music & Performing Arts, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and the University of Birmingham.

Personal Life

He is married to Joanna, has three grown-up children, and lives and works in Ceredigion, Wales, UK.
