Robert "Bob" Swartz is an American businessman who is best known for being the father of Aaron Swartz and founding Mark Williams Company. He is currently a chairman in Impossible Objects, a startup that specializes on 3D-printing for everyday use.
Life
Swartz was born in Chicago in 1950s, to a Jewish family. His father William Mark Swartz had founded a company by the name of Dr. Enuf, specializing in soft drinks. Later on, he and his father turned the soft drink company into a software company called Mark Williams Company, and later sold a clone of UNIX called Coherent. Later in the 80s and 90s, Coherent became irrelevant because of emergence of open-source software like Linux and Swartz closed the company by 1995, citing sales drop. Later on, he helped his son Aaron participate in tech conferences by sending him to any tech conference nearby which helped him meet Lawrence Lessig in ArsDigita, forming a friendship that would help in formation of Creative Commons.[citation needed]
20 years later, Swartz collaborated with a former CEO of Xerox[1] to establish a sustainable 3D printing company by the name of Impossible Objects, raising US$6.4 million.[2]
In 2023, it was revealed by his wife Susan that Swartz was suffering from kidney failure since 2022.[citation needed]
