Robert Van Leer is an American arts executive. He is the CEO of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, California.[1] Van Leer is a renowned arts organization executive and oversaw the expansion of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and its $90 million budget. During his tenure, he expanded the Kennedy Center's programs, facility, and created REACH, the Kennedy Center's first-ever expansion, with flexible indoor and outdoor performance space. Earlier in his career, he began his career in arts administration at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. He would go on to lead and create programs at numerous nationally recognized performance arts centers.[2]

Early life

Van Leer was born in Rochester, New York and raised there. He obtained his fine-arts bachelor's degree from Carnegie-Mellon University and attended Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. Van Leer would later take part in the National Arts Strategies Chief Executive Programs. This program was managed by Harvard Business School, the University of Texas, Austin, and the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Its goal was to change organizations, communities, and the cultural area in a positive way. He also earned a postgraduate degree in landscape design from Inchbald School of Design.[3] Van Leer would eventually take positions closer to relatives in Europe as a managing director of a renowned European arts consulting firm called Wonderbird. Later he became managing director of one of the world's leading dance companies, Nederlands Dans Theater. He held executive leader positions at Barbican Centre,[4] Wigmore Hall, and Lincoln Center.[5]

Career

On July 6, the Kennedy Center's Deborah Rutter tapped Van Leer for his "wealth of multidisciplinary arts experience and creative leadership."[6]

During his tenure at the Kennedy Center, he started the REACH,[7] the first major expansion of the Kennedy Center since Richard Nixon was president in the early 1970s. The $175 million project was based on the assumption that people would want to meet with artists in a more casual setting, which consists of a large and outstanding outdoor place designed by Steven Holl. In 2021 he executive produced the film The Kennedy Center at 50, and later in 2022, The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, which aired on major networks.[8] In March 2023 Van Leer was recently tapped as CEO of Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts,[9][10] a prominent arts center in Beverly Hills, California, named for philanthropist Wallis Annenberg in recognition of The Annenberg Foundation's major gift to fund the campus. It is colloquially known as The Wallis.[11][12][13][14]
