Roberto Rabanne (April 25,1948 -) is an American photographer best known for his documenting rock music icons in the 1960s and 1970s, such as Jimi Hendrix and The Grateful Dead for whom Rabanne acted as official photographer in the late 60’s and beyond.[1] In the decades that followed, Rabanne has created pop art, fashion, erotic and milestone event photography, including the events on the day and week following September 11, 2001. His work has appeared in hundreds of magazine layouts, album covers[2], posters, in books including Jerry on Jerry: The Unpublished Jerry Garcia Interviews and in permanent public exhibitions.[3]

Career[edit]

Rabanne graduated from Berkeley in Southern California in 1977 with a BA degree. At age 20, Rabanne who was a noted activist during the Vietnam war, worked as an usher at a newly opened (March 8, 1968) Fillmore East in NYC. Rabanne saw Jimi Hendrix warming up, asked to take his picture, returned with the photos and earned his first $100 as a professional photographer when Hendrix liked what he captured. [4] Rabanne went on to photograph Hendrix repeatedly over the next few years. Later in 1968, Rabanne, who'd relocated to San Francisco, met Jerry Garcia on the sidewalk in Haight-Ashbury and after establishing a relationship was invited to document The Grateful Dead. Rabanne's photograph of Garcia in his nudie suit[5] is one of the most recognized photos of Garcia in distribution. Rabanne went on to pursue other icons In music, pop art photography, and other cultural venues. Rabanne's work with the Grateful Dead lasted two decades[6] and was featured throughout the documentary, Long Strange Trip[7], which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. In the Seventies Rabanne's photography expanded to include jazz, R&B, reggae, pop, fashion and events. In 2011, Rabanne documented the moments after the first tower was attacked until 5 days after and those photos are on permanent exhibit at the 9/11 Memorial World Trade Center Museum[8] in NYC.

Rabanne's archive of historical photographs of music icons have been seen on VH1's Behind the music series, A&E's Biography series, Saturday Night Live, and Conan O'Brien. He has photos in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and has had work published in magazines including Spin, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. In 1990. he became the first American photographer to publish his own fashion magazine, entitled Fashion Preview[9], Rockport Publishers, now Quarto Group[10]. In 1993, Preview was sold to Toppan Publishing[11]
