Roberto Stefan Foa is a British political scientist. He obtained his PhD from Harvard University, where he completed his dissertation under the supervision of Nobel laureate James A. Robinson.[1] He is Associate Professor in Politics and Public Policy at the University of Cambridge,[2][3] co-founder of the Cambridge Centre for the Future of Democracy[4][5][6][7][8] and an elected Executive Committee member of the World Values Survey.[9] His writings appear in the New York Times,[10][11] Wall Street Journal,[12] Foreign Affairs,[13] and Harvard Business Review.[14] He serves as advisor to the United Nations[15] and Council of Europe.[16]
Foa's first degree was in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford. He then served as a Peter Martin Fellow at the Financial Times and researcher at the World Bank in Washington DC.[17] While in the United States he also founded the Washington European Society together with Domènec Ruiz Devesa and served as its first president.[18][19] His early academic contributions were in the fields of advancing global survey research (in collaboration with Ronald Inglehart and Christian Welzel),[20][21] as well as the study of democracy and democratic trends with Harvard peer Yascha Mounk.[22][23] His work on youth, democracy and global public opinion[24][25][26] is discussed by organizations such as the Atlantic Council,[27] Summit for Democracy,[28] and World Economic Forum,[29] and cited in The Guardian,[30] Financial Times,[31] and CNN.[32]
