Rochester City Ballet is a contemporary ballet company in Rochester, New York.

History[edit]

The Rochester City Ballet was founded in 1987 by Timothy M. Draper, a year after he founded his dance school, the Timothy Draper Center for Dance Education. It was preceded by the Eastman Theater Ballet and the Mercury Ballet Company.[1]

Draper unexpectedly passed away in 2003 of cardiac arrest, shortly after the company announced plans to build a permanent headquarters on the grounds of the Harley School in Brighton, NY, for $1 million..[2] Jamey Leverett served as Draper's replacement as Artistic Director for both the company and the school, the Draper Center for Dance Education. In 2015, Leverett announced she would be stepping down from her role as artistic director of the company, in order to devote her attention to being artistic director at the Draper Center. David Palmer took her place as the Rochester City Ballet's Artistic Director[3]

Activities[edit]

The company does a number of community outreach events in order to help spread dance education, including free performances for students at Rochester City Schools, for special needs children at the Stepping Stones Learning Center, and at local Barnes & Noble locations.[4]. They also hold InStudio events, where the public are able to sit-in on rehearsal sessions [5]

Performances[edit]

Rochester City Ballet is a contemporary company and has performed a number of original ballets. They include some classical repertoire, most notably their annual production of the The Nutcracker, performed in conjunction with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra[6].The company sometimes performs with other contemporary, Rochester-based, groups such as FuturPointe and Garth Fagan Dance.

In 2010 the company had its first season in New York City and in 2013, they performed at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.[4]

Draper Center for Dance Education[edit]

The Draper Center was founded by Tim Draper in 1986 with the goal of creating a facility where students could receive professional dance training without having to leave the Rochester area..[1] The school currently has about 150 students and provides training in several different dance styles, including classical ballet, pointe, variations, modern dance, and jazz [7]. Graduates of the Draper Center have gone on to join professional companies such as the Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the National Ballet of Canada, and Cirque du Soleil[7]
