Career[edit]

Baijnauth started his career directing The Pirate Tapes, a first person account of how Somalian pirates in Puntland operate. The film was first screened at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival[1][2], and was acquired for distribution with HBO in North America, and and FX in Africa.[3]

In the process of making the documentary, the production uncovers an environment disaster, where toxic waste is dumped off in the coast.[4] Despite its commercial success, the following was criticized as entertaining, but lacking focus.[5]

In 2015 he directed Barista, a film following finalists in the US World Barista Championship.[6] The film was acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films.[7]

In 2018 he directed Baristas,[8] a follow up to the global World Barista Championship, with a new set of subjects. He was subsequently nominated and awarded best director for the documentary.[9]
