Rode Hoed
Stichting Rode Hoed
Stichting Rode Hoed is a cultural debate centre, housed in a monumental building on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. Rode Hoed organises debates, lectures, symposia, literary and musical programs for a broad audience. It is also known as a wedding location.[1]
With the debates, the Rode Hoed is a critical follower and encourager of public and political debate. Rode Hoed aims to explore and connect debates in which contradictions are bridged and new insights obtained.[2]
Vrijburg
Until 1629 the building housed a hat factory. In that year it was bought by the Remonstrantse Gemeenschap, by wine buyer Antoni de Lange and doctor Jan van Hartoghvelt. Remonstranten were not allowed to practice their faith in public.[3] The hat factory was broken down in 1630 and the secret church 'Vrijburg' was built, that was active until 1957 and served as a Remonstrant church. The large room is the biggest and oldest secret church in the Netherlands.[4]
In 1989 the building was rediscovered by Huub Oosterhuis and officially reopened on 14 september 1990, with Oosterhuis as director. He was succeeded in 1998 by Anneke Groen. From 2017 till 2021 Clayde Menso was director.
In the Rode Hoed the talk show of Sonja Barend was recorded and at a later stage the television program Het Lagerhuis (The Lower House).[5][6]
