Roger A. Ramsammy
Roger A. Ramsammy is an educator and academic administrator who is the current president of Hudson Valley Community College.[1]
Early Life and Education
Growing up[2] in rural Trinidad and Tobago, Ramsammy emigrated to the United States to pursue higher education. After completing a bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of the District of Columbia, he enrolled in Howard University where he earned a master's degree in Genetics and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology.
Academic Career
He began his teaching career as an adjunct instructor at University of the District of Columbia and Howard University and moved to a full-time tenured position at Palm Beach State College in 1994 where he eventually reached the role of Dean of Academic Affairs. He then moved to the Northern Virginia Community College system in 2012 where he spent four years as a provost and chief academic officer at NOVA’s Manassas campus and was in charge of its Innovation Center and the college-wide STEM initiative. In 2016, he was appointed president[3] at the West campus of Miami Dade College.
Hudson Valley Community College
While at Hudson Valley Community College, he has led efforts to increase international enrollment,[4][5][6] build partnerships with the region’s faith communities[7][8] and increase student retention and student success.[9] He has been at the forefront of establishing C5, the Capital Community College Career Consortium,[10] which brings together the Capital Region’s five community colleges to collaborate on workforce initiatives.
Ramsammy currently serves on the Center for Economic Growth’s Advanced Manufacturing Workgroup and the NYS Regional Economic Development Council. He is on the board of directors of the United Way of the Greater Capital Region.

- Named to American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Commission on Structured Pathways
- Awarded an honorary doctorate of research by Isaac Newton University in Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica
- Led NOVA's commitment to President Obama's STEM Education White House College Opportunity Initiative
- Appointed by SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson to work on SUNY Online Task Force
- Named a commissioner to the national AACC Commission on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
- Virginia Governor's Award for the most innovative STEM program
