Roger Yo is a Taiwanese musician with a background in classical music. He started his songwriting career after being exposed to pop music, and has worked in several international and local record labels.[1] His expertise is songwriting, arrangement and production in various genres. His works span from pop music, film and television soundtracks, to commercials, video games and theater music.[2][3]
Early life[edit]
Back in his student days, Roger enrolled in the music specialized class with a focus on classical music, playing piano and violin. He enjoys the genres of jazz and film soundtracks, and appreciate musicians such as Hisaishi Joe, Sakamoto Ryuichi, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, etc.[4][5]

Early career[edit]
As a student, Roger received a lot of training on music dictation and perfect pitch. Upon first entering the pop music industry, he tried to use his own way of notations and also tried to learn digital music production with MIDI. He often kept re-recording songs repeatedly for better results in his early career.[4][6]
Roger entered the Chinese pop music industry as a production assistant, and has since served as the A&R or copyrighter in many record labels, including HIM International Music, Avex, and Warner Chappell Music, etc.[7][3] At the time, Roger has been managing his songwriting career. His first song released was A-Lin's “Yi Bu Ai Er Bu Xiu 一不愛二不休".[8]
Songwriter and producer[edit]
The song that helped Roger rise to prominence was A-Lin's “Gei Wo Yi Ge Li You Wang Ji 給我一個理由忘記", which is released in the album “Loneliness is Not the Hardest Part 寂寞不痛".[9][3] He has composed, arranged, produced music, and served as the concert director for singers including A-Lin, Angela Chang, Rainie Yang, Vivian Hsu, Pin-Yuan Huang, Ricky Hsiao, Jess Lee, Tiger Huang, Della, Shadya Lan, Jing Chang, Pei-An Yang, Amber Kuo, S.H.E, Ariel Lin, etc.[2][1][10]
In 2015, Roger arranged for A-Lin in the Hunan TV program "I Am a Singer", and produced songs and arrangements for the musical “Tiny Times".[2][3]
In 2017, Roger founded Easytime Entertainment[11][12]. In addition to being a songwriter, he also set foot into record production and artist management.[12]
Artistry[edit]
In an interview, Roger talked about his mindset for producing music, and mentioned that each album has its own marketing strategy. He believes that everything should link to key concept[4], and songwriting is a journey within the songwriter, which requires a lot of self-reflection and flashback of memories.[13][6] Instead of deliberately creating emotions, Roger thinks only through facing oneself and immersing oneself into music can an artist create true and natural emotions.[7][14]
Roger revealed his thoughts about the rapidly changing entertainment industry. He states that he always tries to keep himself aware of every change. As singers and genres diversify, he thinks the barrier to enter the industry is no longer as significant, but it has become more difficult for one to stand out.[4][5] Roger also mentioned that the competition is not only within the music industry, but also with other entertainment industries such as internet TV, podcasts, mobile games and online games. He thinks musicians need to think about how to highlight the value of their music, so that the audience will be willing to choose listening to music as their means of entertainment.[4][6] He believes that in such a period of time, what audiences want is more genuine and real, so songwriters should face their own works with an honest attitude, and find the elements within that can touch people’s souls.[13]
Personal life[edit]
In February 2020, he married the Singaporean singer Kelly Poon and had a ceremony at the end of the same year.[15][16] The two have known each other for years, but began to get closer to each other because of the MÜST songwriting camp.[17][18]
