The Rogerstone power station refers to coal-fired power station situated on the River Ebbw in Rogerstone, Wales. Rogerstone power station was constructed in the 1954-1957s,and brought into operation in the 1958, and after decomissioned in 1984.

History

After the Second World War, electricity demand began in Wales. This required the introduction of two new generators at the Llynfi power station, and in 1951, construction began on two new power stations at Uskmouth and Carmarthen Bay. But it became obvious that another power plant would be needed to power the 66 kV grid. A location was chosen for the new power plant near the village of Rogerstone, after the minister rejected the Machen site. The station occupies an area of 92 acres.

Plant details

Steam Raising Plant

Steam raising plant comprises tworadiant type boilerseach with a steaming capacity of 550,000 ib per hour at a pressure of 950 ib per sq. in., and a temperature of 925 Faringates. All boilers was fed by pulverising coal mills. Each boiler has two Ljungstorm type, vertical spindle, rotary air heaters, whilst two electrostatic precipitators per boiler remove 97.5% of the dust in the flue gases before they enter the chimney. The chimney tall was 105 meters.

Turbo alternator plant

The two 60 mW Parsons turbo alternators was set on the station, with a total capacity of 120 MW. Steam is supplied at 900 Ib per sq in. pressure and 900 faringates to twin stop-valves.

Coal Handing Plant

Coal was supplied to station by rail. The coal storage facility had a capacity of 240 wagons. The wagons were unloaded by two automatic wagon tipplers. After unload, coal was delivered via single conveyors to storage or bunkers.

Circulating Water System

Three 1240 gallons per minute circulating water make-up pumps have been installed in a pump house on the bank of the river Ebbw. closure and demolition

The station was closed in 1984.After privatization in 1990, the site came under the ownership of the National Power. Demolition work was started durning the summer of 1991 and completed by december 1991. Demolition was carried out by Brown and Mason. Now there is a new residential area on the site.
