Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe
Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe was founded in Taiwan by one of Taiwan's National Living Treasure, Cheng Rom-shing. In 2008, Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe was recognized by the Miaoli County Government as the intangible cultural heritage preservation group for the Hakka tea-picking opera in traditional performing arts.
Introduction
In 1987, at the invitation of the Chinese Folk-Arts Foundation to participate in the Hakka Arts Festival organized by the Taipei City Government, Cheng Rom-shing returned to his hometown and reorganized “Qing Mei Yuan,” a tea-picking opera troupe formed by his grandmother Cheng Mei-mei. The group officially performed on stage but was accidentally introduced as the “Cheng Rom-shing Troupe.”. In 1988, it was officially registered in Miaoli County as the “Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe.” Starting from 1998, Cheng Yue-ching took over as the leader of the troupe, with Cheng Rom-shing serving as the artistic director.[1][2]
In 1992, Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe received the National Heritage Award from the Ministry of Education. Cheng Rom-shing also established the “Hakka Opera Academy” in Miaoli County as the main base for the troupe, conducting the training and preservation of Hakka opera. The academy is also the base for the Ching Mei Yuan Cultural and Educational Foundation and the Miaoli Chen Family Pa Yin Troupe. Starting in 1997, the Council for Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Culture) commissioned Cheng Rom-shing to lead the Hakka Opera Talent Training Program, systematically investing in the training of young actors and backstage musicians. The program ran until 2002 and nurtured several mid-generation Hakka opera performers, such as Chiang Yen-li,[3] Chen Chi-hou,[4] Li Wen-hsun,[5] and Chen Su-peng[6]; backstage musicians including Wu Yue-ting [7] and Tsai Yen-jung. [8] Some of the actors and musicians later joined the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts as Hakka opera faculty members. Today, Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe is joined by several young actors who have received formal training in the field, and the troupe members span four generations.[2][9]
The performances of Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe can be seen in theaters, public cultural events, outdoor temple festivals, and Hakka TV programs. Their repertoire includes the reorganization or adaptation of traditional plays by senior artists, adaptations of works from other Chinese theatrical traditions, and collaborations with literary writers to incorporate Hakka cultural themes.[10] Cheng Rom-shing, the main composer for the performing pieces, comes from a family with a background in Hakka opera and music, and has studied Hakka opera, Taiwanese opera, Luantan opera, Peking opera, and other musical forms. As a result, the music of Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe combines elements from Hakka opera, hill songs, tea-picking songs, and the “Nine Accents and Eighteen Tones,” as well as influences from “Luantan,” “Siping,” and “Waichiang” music styles.[11]
