Biography

Roman Hedeon Markov was a celebrated occultist who was well known for his great knowledge in symbology and occultism study and practice. Born on August 13, 1830- September 14, 1891, in the city of Odessa, Markov was from a middle-class family as his biological father was a renowned navy captain, with no intention to follow his father’s plan of joining the navy, Markov joined Byzantine seminary which was famous for offering seminary courses.  During his stint at the facility, he got fancied about ancient symbology and modern occult practices.  The Victorian era was truly a strange era when everyone was exploring the world around them. It was during this time that people started to go to unravel the deep mysteries of spiritualism and also more about secret societies.

Though it hasn’t been confirmed what made the young seminarian to quit school it has been highly thought that he felt that this was not the place for him which prompted him to leave the seminary in 1878 without being ordained.

Thoughts of joining his father in sea warfare would sometime get the better of him where he decided to enrol for the navy. It is during this time that he got the chance to travel the world. During this time, he traversed the black sea and the sea of Azov travelling to countries including Slovakia, Hungary and Poland and Russia. On his frequent visits to Russia, he also had the chance to meet great authors including Alexander Dumas the French author a. While working in the navy he met a great Dutch friend who is sometimes credited with having introduced him into the world of symbology and occultism studies. with this new interest, Markov decided to quit the navy and concentrate more on this new found passion. He would later travel to different countries including Egypt, Mexico and even Palestine where he studied ancient symbolism and how ancient occultism was practised.

Middle career and profession

It was during Markov times that the term occultism was being popularized. It is widely believed that the famous works of Eliphas Levi fancied the young Markov who widely studied his works including the book, ‘Ritual Magic’ which in turn served as the turning point for this budding occultist. Markov is believed to have got too much into this passion that he changed his first and second name to names he claimed he had in previous lives. He is also accredited to writing famous books including ‘The Unknown Mystery’ which focused more on decoding the mystery associated with occults. In his works, he tried to resolve the mystery related to Spiritism. In his view which he expressed in his book he argued that spirits were actual entities which existed, this was contrary to the more common term spiritualism which was the belief that something existed within a person’s soul.   Unlike other occultists like Aleister Crowley who openly distanced themselves from Christianity Markov strived to maintain his former Christian relationship owing to his upbringing. However, like other occultists, he placed much emphasis on the spiritual realization of the individual.  Coupling this with Spiritism Markov was able to explore the human soul and spirit.

Books and credited works

Markov is credited with having written many books on the matter occultism this is despite the strict guidelines on matters publishing occultism books in Russia due to the strict church censorship. However, selected European books found their way into Russia thus making the study of occultism and spiritualism to be popular.

Most of his original works can be found globally in all libraries where most of it has been translated into different languages including, Spanish, French and German. He is also accredited to having spent some considerable finances and intelligent towards popularizing spiritualism more to that he was a renowned professor who gave great lectures at the Moscow University. These lectures served as some good platforms in unravelling the mysteries associated with occults.

He is also accredited of being a founder member of the Theosophical society a society which referred to various systems of mystic gnosis especially those reflected especially in Buddhism, Neoplatonism where the knowledge of God is achieved through spiritual ecstasy or direct intuition. other founder members were Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott.

Final years

Health deterioration coupled with old age prompted Markov to move to Sicily, Italy. this decision to move to Italy is credited to his love for the island life and rich history. here he continued working on her textbooks while still serving as a consultant.  His writing and studies in matters Neoplatonism, spiritualism, kabballah and Freemasonry which are still used in modern day studies thanks to his immense contribution.
