From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ronald Joseph Kustrup (/'kʌstɹʌp/; born November 28, 1989) is an American artist,[1] [2] businessman,[3] and educational reformer[4] based out of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. His most recognizable artwork dealing with popular culture has been exhibited internationally dealing with topics related to mass consumerism.[5] He co-founded The Kind Institute, an inquiry based arts and entertainment center located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [6]

Early life and education[edit]

Kustrup was born in Princeton, New Jersey to Ronald Wayne Kustrup and June Kustrup. His father was an iron worker and barber. His mother was a barber and real estate broker.[7]

When he was 14 he began taking Saturday classes in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, at the University of the Arts, eventually fully enrolling into the institution.[8]

While in the Fine Arts department as an undergraduate Kustrup created along with his team, a sculpture commissioned by the Philadelphia Eagles Management to display at the Lincoln Financial Field Stadium during the 45-19 Philadelphia Eagles victory over the New York Jets game.[9] He eventually received his Bachelors of Fine Art and Master of Arts in Teaching with Summa Cum Laude at The University of the Arts.[10] He is currently doing research at Eastern University within the Certification of Principal Program.

Art career[edit]

Kustrup continued living in Philadelphia Pennsylvania upon his graduation taking up a residency at Goldilocks Gallery where he lived and exhibited his work.[11]

He was recognized by Mashiko Nagasaki the owner of Medialia Rack and Hamper Gallery located in Chelsea Manhattan New York City.[12] [13] His work had international recognition through Medialia Rack and Hamper Gallery [14] garnishing The Pollock Award in 2012[15] and The McCahill Awards for Creativity in Teaching in 2015.[16]

Business career[edit]

While student teaching Kustrup began implementing his graduate research on inquiry based learning in the classroom.[17] His practicum mentor Maria Pandolfi agreed to work alongside Kustrup in expanding inquiry based education though a business plan. With the help of city real estate developer Ori Feibush they founded and co-operated an arts center in Point Breeze Philadelphia Pennsylvania for low income families dubbed The Kind Institute.

The Kind Institute located in Point Breeze Philadelphia Pennsylvania began operation in 2016[18] The company garnered a non-profit LLC with an umbrella contract under Urban Affairs Coalition.[19]

Kustrup managed after school programs through TKI, using inquiry based education with a concentration on arts, music, and technology.[20] The center also hosted interactive jazz nights along with the help of JOTTS a Philadelphia based jazz organization managed by Lorraine Yarborough and Cory Espinosa.[21] [22]

During his time as co-founder and co-CEO of TKI continued his research on inquiry based learning at The Source Farm ecovillage in Saint Thomas Jamaica. Along with his students Kustrup built a kiln for the village to fire pottery.[23]

Educational career[edit]

Kustrup began teaching at West Philadelphia High School, a Title II secondary school located on 42nd and Spruce in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania[24] While working at WEST he made connections with students to The Mural Arts Program, The Kind Institute, The Jamaican Source Farm, and The University of the Arts.[23] [24]

After moving out of Philadelphia Pennsylvania he began teaching graphic design,[25] advertisement, and IB Diploma Programme Art at School Lane Charter School.[26]

Representation[edit]

His works are exhibited in the collections of various galleries throughout the world, among them the Medialia Rack and Hamper Gallery.[27] [28] [29] He has held residence and representation through Goldilocks Gallery located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania[30]and later Medialia Rack and Hamper Gallery located in New York, New York.[31]

Aesthetic[edit]

Kustrup’s work is often described as Neo-Pop.[32] His work depicts colorful installations containing assemblage sculptures of both everyday objects juxtaposed with less common mass market materials.[33]

In Giftwrapped Internet Kustrup uses video game consoles, virtual reality headsets, and giftwrapped assemblages to address the mass market appeal of simulated realities.[5]

Philosophy[edit]

Through interviews[3] and artist statements there is a consistent discourse regarding the consumerist qualities of objects and their interactions with what he considers an American culture that is embracing Post-Structuralism.[5] Kustrup’s work is often described as post-structuralist Neo-pop.

On education[edit]

Kustrup founded The Kind Institute with his student teaching mentor and business partner Maria Pandolfi.[18] The center focused on education using inquiry based assessment and concentrated on arts, music, technology and mindfulness within the curriculum.[34] [35]

In an article highlighting The Kind Institute success in education within Philadelphia, renowned journalist Morgan Falconer wrote,

“Kustrup coordinates with a variety of individual donors, companies and fundraising campaigns in efforts to raise funds… Mike Romeo, a cartoonist and KIND Institute art teacher, enjoys the friendly work environment and relationship Kustrup cultivates with his employees.”

Falconer places Kustrup's work in education on a path for student success.[3]
