From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Roof collapse

Roof collapse is an incident in which the roof of a structure fails. The can occur as a result of natural disasters, fires, or weather events.

Roofs usually do not collapse suddenly, instead slowly weakening over time. Before a roof collapses, it will show warning signs. Lack of maintenance will usually at some point lead to collapsing roof.[1] Roofs are usually made so that they can withstand anywhere between 30 to even 100 pounds per square foot of extra weight.[2]

In 1922 the Knickerbocker Theater's roof collapsed under heavy snows killing dozens.[3] Roof collapse is a danger in burning buildings.[4] Roof collapse are a cause of mining disasters.[5]

Various factors

Snow

According to one research paper, from the year 2001 to 2021, and with sample size of 266 cases, 78% of snow-related roof collapses happened to civilian buildings.[6]

If the doors are not closing/opening properly, it may be a sign of too much snow on the roof.[7]

Rainwater

Rainwater ponding on top of light-weight flat roofs causes around ~20 roof collapses every year in the Netherlands.[8]

Burning

Roofs that are on fire pose high risk of collapsing on top of firefighters.[9]
