RooflineAI GmbH (commonly Roofline) is a German deep tech company that develops AI compiler software for deploying machine learning models on edge devices. Founded in 2024 as a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University, the company builds a retargetable AI compiler based on MLIR (Multi-Level Intermediate Representation) and IREE that compiles trained AI models from frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and ONNX into optimized executables for diverse hardware targets including CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs.[1][2]
History
Academic origins
Roofline originated from research conducted at the Institute for Communication Technologies and Embedded Systems (ICE) at RWTH Aachen University.[3] Co-Founder and CEO Jan Moritz Joseph had led a research group at RWTH Aachen since 2020 focused on energy-efficient and resource-efficient execution of AI on embedded systems.[4]
The company was formally incorporated in 2024 by Jan Moritz Joseph, Maximilian Bartel, Thomas Zimmermann, and Rainer Leupers as a spin-off from the Chair of Software for Systems on Silicon (SSS) at RWTH Aachen University.[3] The SSS chair has produced multiple successful spin-offs, including LISATek (acquired by Synopsys), Silexica (acquired by Xilinx/AMD), and MachineWare.[5]
Technology
Compiler architecture
Roofline's core technology is a retargetable AI compiler built on MLIR and IREE, both open-source projects from the LLVM ecosystem.[1][6] The compiler uses layered abstraction to translate models from AI frameworks into optimized intermediate representations and then compiles them into executables for specific hardware backends.[1]
Partnerships and community
Roofline contributes to open-source projects in the LLVM ecosystem[6] and is active in the compiler and edge AI research community, with appearances at events including the LLVM Developers' Meeting,[7] the CODAI workshop,[8] the oneAPI DevSummit,[9] and Edge AI Foundation events.[10]
