Roosje Klap (Amsterdam, 26 April 1973) is a Dutch designer, art educator, and mixed media artist.
Biography[edit]
Roosje Klap studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (1991-1996) and Leiden University (2020-2023). She has been exhibiting her work since 1997 in various solo- and group exhibitions, both in The Netherlands and abroad, including the Typojanchi Biennale in Seoul, South Korea, INTL (formerly: Graphic Design Festival Scotland, and the National Digital Art Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
In 2018, she founded the collective ARK, an acronym for Atelier Roosje Klap. With the collective, she works on projects in the international cultural field. Besides Klap, the collective includes Arran Lyon, Loes Claessens, Louis Braddock Clarke, Norá Békés, Senka Milutinović, Teoniki Rożynek, Valentin Vogelmann, and Zuzanna Zgierska.
As of May 1, 2024, Roosje Klap will be appointed as the general director of the lens-based media biennial Noorderlicht in Groningen.[1].
Awards and Honors[edit]
In 2022, Klap, along with ARK, received a Golden Calf from the Netherlands Film Festival for the project ‘LAWKI’ in the category of Best Digital Cultural Production 2022[2][3]. She has also won various other awards, including the European Design Award in 2011 for her design of the 'Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists' and her 'Rijksakademie Jaarverslag' (Annual Report).
Work[edit]
In 2013, Roosje Klap was commissioned by PostNL to design the '1001 Women from Dutch History' series of postage stamps, with Queen Máxima being the first to receive the stamps[4]. Additionally, Klap created another notable postage stamp series the same year, titled 'Da's Toch Een Kaart Waard,' featured in a short documentary about her as part of the 'Dutch Profiles: Roosje Klap]' series[5]. Collaborating with architect Claudia Linders in the same year, Klap created the design of the inaugural euro coin featuring the likeness of King Willem-Alexander, issued in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with a production of 3.5 million two-euro coins. In 2021, the National Collection of The Netherlands acquired her silkscreen series ‘Exquisit Revisit,’ permanently displayed at the Council for the Protection of Children Amsterdam of the Ministry of Justice of The Netherlands. Furthermore, in 2023, Klap designed the Plumbing The System exhibition at the Dutch pavilion for the 18th Venice Biennale, curated by Jan Jongert.
Teaching[edit]
Between 2013 and 2021, Klap, alongside designer Niels Schrader, served as the co-heads of the Graphic Design department at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. During their tenure, they established the Non Linear Narrative master's program in 2017. She contributed her expertise as an advisor and selection committee member under Lex ter Braak's leadership at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in Maastricht from 2013 to 2019[6]

Roosje has two children, Wijs De Groot (2004), and Pier De Groot (2006), from a previous marriage with artist Kaleb de Groot.
