Rosalie Rice was born in 1898. She was a member of Cumann na mBan during the 1916 Easter Rising and sent the telegram that would notify members of the IRB in America to the rising in Ireland. Later, during the Irish Civil War, she was imprisoned in the republic to prevent her from providing information to Anti-Treaty Forces.

Easter Rising[edit]

Rosalie Rice was a member of Cumann na mBan[1] at the start of the rising. After the rising begun, she sent a telegram to her cousins, Timothy and Eugene Ring, at the Valencia Cable Station. The message read: "Tom operated on successfully today-Margaret O'Sullivan." The message has usually been told as being: "Mother operated on successfully today-Kathleen," but recently that has been proven to be incorrect. The two then sent the telegram to leaders of the IRB in the United States. After the rising Rice was imprisoned by the British and her cousins were removed from their position at the Cable Station.

Civil War[edit]

During the Irish Civil War, Rice was imprisoned to prevent her from providing information to Anti Treaty Forces.

Family[edit]

Rosalie's parents were George Rice Sr. and Eleanor Ring. She had a brother named George Rice Jr. She also had two children.

Legacy[edit]

There is a monument dedicated to her and her cousins in Kenmare.[2]
