Rose Garland Thornton (1919 - April 26, 2014) was a politician from Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan.
Early life[edit]
Thornton was born Sioux Lookout, Ontario, on June 30 1919.[1] After moving to Detroit, she met her future husband, Harry G. Garland. The two got married in 1945.[2]
Political career[edit]
From 1987 until she retired in 2008, Thornton served on the city council of Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. For her last five years on the council, she served as the Mayor Pro-Tem, the first female Mayor Pro-Tem in the city's history.[2] Thornton was Grosse Pointe Shores' longest serving elected official.[2]
Personal life[edit]
In 1945, Thornton married Harry G. Garland. Garland died in 1972.[3] Eight years later, she got remarried, to Thomas Patrick Thornton, a United States District Court judge. He died on July 1, 1985.[4]
Rose Thornton died on April 26, 2014 in St. Clair Shores.[1]
