Rostov Academic Symphony Orchestra ( abbreviated as RASO , until 1994 - the Rostov Symphony Orchestra ) is a Russian symphony orchestra situated in Rostov-on-Don.

History of the Orchestra[edit]

Rostov Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1935 by the conductor Bruno Berman. In 1984, the orchestra won in the All-Russian Symphony Orchestra Competition. In 1990, the Rostov Orchestra took part in the International Tchaikovsky Competition , accompanying the participants of the third round. In 1994, after a successful tour to Moscow under the direction of Ravil Martynov, the orchestra was awarded the academic title and received its current name.

The extensive repertoire of the orchestra includes both old classics as well as contemporary music. In addition to the music of such renowned composers of the 20th century as D. Shostakovich , Khachaturian , Khrennikov , Shchedrin , Eshpai , Schnittke , Kancheli and Falik , the orchestra performs the music of contemporary Rostov composers. The Rostov Symphony Orchestra performed about one hundred premieres of their compositions.

The orchestra consists of 109 musicians, among which two people were awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of Russia (violinist Alexander Mileikovsky and cellist Mikhail Shcherbakov) and three - the titles of Honored Artist of Russia (violinist Mikhail Viljevok , clarinetist Andrei Udovenko and harpist Natalia Dobretsova).

Merzhanov, D. Bashkirov, N. Petrov, L. Toradze, J. Sitkovetsky , R. Kerer, N. Gutman, O. Kagan, L. Isakadze, E. Nesterenko, E. Obraztsova, Yu. Bashmet, V. Krainev, E. Grach, V. Tretyakov, E. Nesterenko, E. Obraztsova, N. Trull, S. Tarasov, D. Matsuev, G. Murzha, V. Ovchinnikov, D. Kramer, M. Kultyshev A. Buzlov, N. Sts, Pisarev and many others performed with this orchestra .

In August 2011 Vadim Vilinov was appointed as the creative director and chief conductor of the Rostov Academic Symphony Orchestra, he previously headed the Rostov State Concert Orchestra of Wind Instruments V.N. Ezhdika
