RouteNote is an independent music publishing and distribution company, based in Truro, UK. With a mission to help independent artists can distribute their music for free to top and popular music streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer... etc).[1]

Biography & History[edit]

Launched in 2007 as an extension of Black and White Recording Studio, based in Redruth, Cornwall. With a vision to shape the transformation of the music industry. The elitism of the music industry meant recording artists signed to large label’s had unrivalled privilege and exposure over independent artists and labels. The digital revolution transformed the music industry, forcing it to take on a digital body. Informed with our own experiences and recognising the technological shift.[2]

Details[edit]

It is an independent label created in order to help new artists publish their productions without mediating with some content aggregator or an established record company. RouteNote services allow all the productions of an artist to be distributed to the largest digital music sales platforms, such as iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. The content publication and distribution services in RouteNote can be provided in two modes: the first is totally free for the artist and in this the musician can upload their content to the site and of the profits obtained from the production, a percentage will be for the entity and the rest will be for the artist or label. In the second modality, the artist or label pays an annual membership to RouteNote and the profits from all productions go to the artist or label. The platform allows uploading content in high quality MP3 format (over 192 Kbps) and FLAC files

Operating mode[edit]

RouteNote is a content publishing medium open to all. The publication mechanics are as follows: When the material is ready to be published, the website is entered and a private account of the user (the artist or label) is entered. When entering, the option is given to enter a new launch, for this they grant a UPC code for the registration of the new launch, although the user can also place his own. Then the basic data of the release are entered such as the artist, the title of the release, year, cover and other data. You must also enter data on the copyright of the music and the name of the record label if you have one, however if the artist is totally independent you can put your name. Subsequently, the content is uploaded, when this stage is complete, the data for each song must be filled in with the title, subtitle and / or artists participating in each track. Finally, you select the online stores in which you want the content to appear and finally accept the terms and conditions.

After this there is an approval period - from two weeks to a month - in which site moderators analyze the content and if it meets the conditions, it will be published. The minimum period to publish an album or single is one month.
