Roxana Mehran (born October 17, 1962) is a renowned interventional cardiologist, author, professor and researcher. Mehran's cardiology research is among the most cited in her field[1]. She was a founding physician of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, New York City, in 2000. She currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology[2] and is also a co-founder of Women as One[3], advocating for women in medicine and cardiovascular disease.
Early life and education
Mehran was born in Tehran, Iran, before coming to the United States. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from New York University in 1983. She then enrolled at St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. She graduated from SGU with a Doctor of Medicine in 1987. Mehran completed her residency training in the internal medicine program at University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Hartford, CT, where she served as chief resident from 1990 to 1991. She completed cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowships at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City (1991-95).
Medical career
Mehran began her career in the mid 1990s as an instructor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine before moving on to become an interventional cardiologist at Washington Hospital Center as well as director of clinical research and data coordinating center at WHC's Cardiology Research Foundation (CRF). Then, she moved to New York to work at Lenox Hill Hospital from 1999 to 2004. Mehran was an associate clinical professor at New York University School of Medicine from 2002 to 2004, and then associate professor of medicine and the director of outcomes research, data coordination and analysis at Columbia University Irving Medical Center's Center for Interventional Vascular Therapy from 2004 to 2010.
Her current position is as a professor of medicine, cardiology, and population health science and policy at Mount Sinai[4], a position she has held since 2010. She has founded and leads an Academic Research Organization for Clinical Trials in Interventional Cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and has served on executive committees and as principal investigator of numerous pivotal trials in cardiovascular medicine.
Mehran advocates for women in medicine with a focus on her field of cardiology, including in a Lancet study that showed a lack of gender-specific research related to women's heart health[5]. She co-founded Women as One, an organization dedicated to the advancement of women physicians, and in 2020, she was named lead commissioner for Lancet's Commission on Women and Cardiovascular Disease[6].
Medical research
Mehran is the director of interventional cardiovascular research and clinical trials at the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute of Mount Sinai[7], working alongside renowned cardiologist Valentín Fuster. Her clinical trials and research focuses on developing randomized clinical trials. She is internationally recognized for her work as a clinical trial specialist with complex data analyses and outcomes research within the field of interventional cardiology. Mehran has published more than 1,200 peer-reviewed articles in some of the world's foremost journals[8] [9] [10] [11]. Her most oft-cited work centers around risk scores for bleeding and acute kidney injury[12] and cardiovascular health[13][14]. According to Clarivate Analytics, Mehran was among the top 1 percent most cited researchers in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
