Royal Hackaway is an annual student-run hackathon open to students worldwide, held on the first weekend of February at Royal Holloway, University of London run by the Royal Holloway Computing Society.

History[edit]

2018 Freshers Hackathon[edit]

Royal Hackaway began as a Freshers hackathon in 2018.[1]. The concept was to enable Royal Holloway, University of London students to code in a competitive environment to win prizes.

2018 MLH Localhost[edit]

In 2018, following the Freshers hackathon, Royal Holloway hosted the 2018 MLH Localhost hackathon event[2]. Allowing interested members of the community to connect and learn more about hosting a hackathon [3].

Royal Hackaway 2018[edit]

Royal Hackaway was the first event hosted at Royal Holloway, University of London to use the name Royal Hackaway, hosted attendees from 20 universities and ran for 24 hours [4]. Royal Hackaway was the first hackathon at Royal Holloway and was supported by the Major Hacking Leauge (MLH) [5].

Royal Hackaway 2019[edit]

Royal Hackaway v2 was the second iteration of Royal Hackaway it adopted the uniform version branding that continues to be used to this day. This was a 24-hour event supported by MLH [6]. Sponsors included GitHub, Balsamiq, Guardtime, IG Group and Vonage [7].

Royal Hackaway v3[edit]

In 2020 Royal Hackaway v3 was hosted. This hackathon was a 48-hour event, that was open to university students from around the world [8]. Royal Hackaway v5 was supported by UkGovcamp [9].

Royal Hackaway v4[edit]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Royal Hackaway v4 was held virtually on the streaming platform Twitch. The event continued to be a 48-hour based hackathon, with commercial sponsors including DigitalOcean, 20i [10] and GitHub, again with the support of MLH [11]. Prizes were won by students from universities around the world [12] [13] [14]. Royal Hackaway v4 was nominated for the National Societies & Volunteering Awards run by Organised Fun [15].

Royal Hackaway v5[edit]

In 2022 Royal Hackaway v5 was hosted as a hybrid event, allowing participants to join either virtually or physically at Royal Holloway, University of London. This was the first time a hybrid hackathon had been held in the United Kingdom [16]. Sponsors included Royal Holloway, University of London, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT and Tata Consultancy Services with the support of MLH and Hackathons UK and the Student's Union of Royal Holloway [17] [18]
